US President-elect Donald Trump is likely to choose Florida Senator Marco Rubio as his Secretary of State, according to media reports.
Two people familiar with the matter confirmed this to CNN, while ABC News said that in the morning Trump’s assessment was leaning towards Ric Grenell for the post, but over the course of the day, he switched his preference to Rubio after a series of calls and conversations with allies of the Florida lawmaker.
He is expected to momentarily make the announcement for Rubio, 53, who has served in the Senate since 2011.
The lawmaker is currently vice-chairman of the Senate Select Committee on Foreign Intelligence and is also a member of the upper chamber’s Foreign Relations Committee.
Rubio was one of the options the GOP considered when it was looking for the vice-presidential candidate on its ticket.
The politician previously made it clear that he was interested in joining Trump’s cabinet if it was for the right job, CNN said based on several sources familiar with the process.
Rubio, who was born in Miami and is the son of Cuban immigrants, has a close relationship with incoming chief of staff Susie Wiles.
The senator is one of the most active members of Congress in favour of Cuba policy.
Trump continues to build his team of loyalists, following his convincing victory on 5 November over the Democratic nominee, Vice President Kamala Harris. President 47 will be inaugurated on 20 January 2025.
