Seminar on the migration phenomenon: Cuba-Venezuela concludes

The international seminar on the study of the structural causes of the migration phenomenon and good practices of comprehensive care for migrants, case: Cuba-Venezuela, concludes today in Caracas, after two days of debates.

This event aims to consolidate knowledge of the migration phenomenon and strengthen cooperation between Havana and Caracas, through critical reflection and the exchange of experiences, as well as making available the capacities for comprehensive care for migrants.

This was stated the day before by Pedro Sassone, Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs for Comprehensive Care for Venezuelan Migration, at the inauguration of the seminar in the Casa Amarilla of the Foreign Ministry, according to a press release from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The meeting is aimed at studying the structural cause of the migratory phenomenon through a geopolitical, social and cultural debate, based on the framework of the legality of human rights, said the diplomat.

The Venezuelan deputy foreign minister for Latin America, Rander Peña, denounced the violence of the US government as reflected in mass deportations and inhumane conditions in detention centres.

He said that nationals currently face dangers if they travel to the US, where «there are no guarantees, there is a radicalised policy that violates human dignity».

Havana’s ambassador in Caracas, Dagoberto Rodríguez, meanwhile, reflected on the US practice of using migration as a political springboard, which it manipulates to develop a conflictive relationship with the island.

In this regard, the diplomat urged the nations to address this issue «from a legal, political, social and human perspective», with the aim of strengthening diplomatic relations based on mutual respect.

This international seminar was organised by the Instituto de Altos Estudios Diplomáticos «Pedro Gual» of Venezuela, and the Embassy and the Instituto Superior de Relaciones Internacionales «Raúl Roa» of Cuba.

During the first day, among other topics, the impact of US migration policy in the regional geopolitical context, the criminalisation of migration and human rights, and the systematisation of good practices in the international framework of comprehensive care for migrants were discussed.
