Security Reinforced for BRICS Summit in Brazil

Brazil’s Federal Police (PF), as security coordinator, will conduct final adjustments today to bolster protection for the BRICS summit scheduled for 6-7 July in Rio de Janeiro.

As part of the security plan, the PF – in a joint operation with Rio’s Civil Police and Military Police forces from Alagoas, the Federal District, Mato Grosso, Minas Gerais, and Rio Grande do Sul – executed drills at Rio’s Marina da Glória. The objective was to identify and eliminate potential threats to participants at the cooperation mechanism’s event, which seeks to strengthen its geopolitical and international economic relevance.

The exercise mobilised explosive ordinance disposal teams alongside detection units and sniffer dogs trained to locate suspicious materials. Additionally, the Military Police State Secretariat conducted tactical manoeuvres on Wednesday with its special forces troops at the Museum of Modern Art in Flamengo Park, who will secure the summit.

Organisers announced Rio will remain closed for four days due to the extended July holiday weekend. Municipal authorities declared public holidays this Friday and Monday. The forum – bringing together leaders from Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, and new member states – has convened in the Rio-based capital since 30 June, featuring diplomatic talks under robust surveillance.

This measure aims to facilitate international summit logistics while minimising disruption to residents. Meetings primarily centre on southern and central zones, notably neighbourhoods like São Conrado, Copacabana, and Flamengo where major hotels and convention venues are located.

Security arrangements include traffic restrictions, armed forces deployment, drones, helicopters, and containment barriers. The holiday period starting Friday seeks to reduce transport and public service impacts while allowing summit activities to proceed with minimal local disruption.

Police sources indicated the approach draws inspiration from models like the G20, which implemented similar operational measures. Authorities confirmed additional preventive actions will continue in coming days to ensure protection for attending heads of state and delegations.

For President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, Brazil’s 2025 BRICS presidency priorities will advance discussed agendas including peace initiatives and environmental preservation.
