Second International Biennial of Political Humour Announced

The Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Cuba, the National Council of Visual Arts and the magazine La Jiribilla, invite artists, illustrators, cartoonists and humourists from all over the world to participate in the Second International Biennial of Political Humour, to be held in this capital from the 9th to the 14th of June this year.

This event seeks to playfully explore the impact of globalisation and associated phenomena from a critical perspective; on this occasion, specifically, it encourages the tackling of themes related to cultural colonialism and the harmful influence of the hegemonic cultural industry on contemporary society.

Creators with works aligned to the theme may submit their materials before the 31st of March in digital format via the email bienalhumorpoliticocu@gmail.com, in a file correctly identified with the author’s first and last names—in addition to their pseudonym—their country of origin, the title of the work and contact information.

Furthermore, the files to be sent as attachments must be in JPG format, with a resolution of 300 dpi and no less than 2400 pixels on the longest side.

For their part, the works selected as winners will be exhibited in the main exhibition and in the collateral shows; although, according to the announcement itself, there is the possibility they may be published in the event’s promotional materials and catalogues, always crediting the author and respecting intellectual property rights.

The jury’s decision will be final, and three Prizes will be awarded during the Second International Biennial of Political Humour; a space that will also host a theoretical event to address issues related to the work of graphic humourists in general and, in particular, those linked to the proposed theme.

Held in June 2024, the first edition featured nearly half a hundred artists from 24 countries, who presented their works on the theme The Fight Against Neo-Fascism; alongside an extensive programme that included theatrical performances and film screenings; concerts, a fair dedicated to children at the Cuba Pavilion, as well as book presentations and visits to schools.
