Santa Clara beats in Little League World Series debut

The next match will be on Monday against the winner of the game between Australia and Taipei of China.

The Santa Clara Bombers made their debut today with a 4×1 win over Brno of the Czech Republic in the Little League World Series in the US city of Williamsport.

At the Volunteer Stadium, the pupils of manager Everaldo Machado were dominated by right-hander Illia Kolomoiets, who in 5.2 innings had given them 10 strikeouts.

However, before the end of the fifth inning came the comeback with a pair of key doubles in succession by Leonardo Junco and Marlon Herrera, the latter to bring in two runners.

And in the sixth act, the Cubans finished off the Czech team with another two runs, efficiently executing a double-steal play and followed up with a run-scoring hit by bartender Adrián Fuentes.

Villaclareño left-hander Deivy Hernández allowed the European side’s only score in the same first inning, on a double by the lefty Dominik Maly with a runner on.

Hernández pitched four innings with two hits and six strikeouts to earn the win. In addition, there was excellent relief from Yans Espinosa, who threw a pair of episodes with three strikeouts.

The next game for the Santa Cruz Bombers will be on Monday against the winner of the game between Australia and Taipei of China.
