Russia Donates 470 Tonnes of Vegetable Oil to Cuba

As part of the Russian Federation’s collaboration with the UN World Food Programme (WFP), Cuba today received nearly 470 metric tonnes of fortified vegetable oil in Havana. This donation will benefit disaster victims and vulnerable populations.

During a ceremony at Mincin’s Distribution Centre in Old Havana, H.E. Victor V. Koronelli, Russian Ambassador, stated the aid originated from Russia’s Ministry of Civil Defence, Emergencies and Disaster Relief (EMERCOM). The event was attended by Deputy Ministers Víctor Artola Madrazo (Foreign Trade and Investment) and Aracelys Cardoso Hernández (Domestic Trade), alongside other officials.

«We shall continue supporting sister Cuba through international organisations and bilateral channels,» affirmed the diplomat. Koronelli noted Russia’s 2024 contributions included emergency medical modules, fire/rescue motorcycles, first-aid kits, water purification filters, plus prior donations of sunflower oil and peas.

The Ambassador expressed conviction that this «modest contribution» will tangibly assist vulnerable Cubans – particularly children and the elderly – amid intensified US economic sanctions. He announced two further vegetable oil shipments: one already in Havana and another arriving in August, each weighing 187 tonnes. «This clearly demonstrates Cuba is not alone,» he emphasised, adding: «Russia remains steadfastly committed to this nation’s nutritional security.»

WFP Resident Representative Etienne Labande valued EMERCOM and Russia’s contribution, noting they fund 32% of WFP projects in Cuba. William Díaz Menéndez, Mincex Director-General of Cooperation, thanked Russia for its «unconditional, traditional support» and recognised WFP’s vital role in advancing food sovereignty.

The donation will assist populations affected by 2023 Hurricanes Oscar and Rafael; maintain Mincin’s bimonthly assistance for vulnerable groups/pregnant women in five eastern provinces; and enable WFP’s prepositioned food reserves for rapid disaster response.

Díaz Menéndez concluded: «Gestures like Russia’s demonstrate our nations’ commitment to upholding fraternity and solidarity between governments and peoples, even amidst natural adversities.»
