The Centre for Environmental Engineering and Biodiversity (Ciba), a scientific institution based in Morón and subordinate to the Environment Agency, has concluded its project Rehabilitation of Coastal Dunes in Jardines del Rey: An Alternative for Disaster Risk Reduction and Climate Change Adaptation.
Executed between 2022 and 2024, this environmental initiative implemented comprehensive actions to conserve, maintain, and restore segments of sandy beaches. Over 1,650 square metres of Las Coloradas beach in Cayo Coco were rehabilitated with native vegetation. This achievement resulted from producing more than 11,000 seedlings using tube technology and agroecological practices at Ciba’s nursery.
Additional accomplishments include biodiversity characterisation, management of 132 cubic metres of biomass from exotic and invasive plants, development of a methodological framework for assessing dune system risks, and training for managers from six hotels.
Concurrently, Ciba finalised a foundational project for integrated natural resource management and climate change adaptation in the Great Northern Wetland of Ciego de Ávila – a site of international significance designated a Ramsar Wetland in 2002. This project modelled future climate scenarios and evaluated their impact on the ecosystem.
Furthermore, institutional capacities were strengthened, and information systems enhanced to ensure effective, sustainable implementation of adaptation measures for emerging climate realities.
