A total of three of the nine people killed and 11 of the 55 injured in traffic accidents in Ciego de Avila up to the end of May were pedestrians, which increases the pedestrian accident rate in this province.
This was made known to this radio station by Sonia Hernández Talavera, executive secretary of the Road Safety Commission in the province, who added that in the first five months of 2024, 57 such accidents were recorded, 15 less than in the same period last year.
Disrespect for the right of way, lack of attention to vehicle control, speeding and pedestrian indiscipline are the main causes of these events in this province, where the municipalities of Ciego de Avila and Morón are among those with the highest accident rates.
Hernández Talavera called on road users, especially pedestrians, to comply with the measures established in the Road Safety Code, such as always walking on pavements or, if there are no pavements, on the side of the road in the opposite direction to traffic.
