Nearly three years after the devastating fire at the Supertanker Base in the western province of Matanzas, tangible progress is evident in recovering the 200,000 cubic metres of fuel storage capacity lost in August 2022.
The four tanks completely destroyed by the flames are gradually being replaced through Cuba-China collaboration, with joint efforts constructing Tanks 88, 49-1, 86, and 87, according to a report by local broadcaster Tv Yumurí.
«Overall, the project is advancing. All four tanks have their cladding installed, and we are in the final mechanical completion phase before moving to painting,» stated Industrial Engineer Richard Daniel Martínez Sánchez, Head of the Integrated Project Directorate.
Tank 88 – fabricated by Cuban workers – is 60% complete, while the three remaining tanks show significant progress under Chinese crews. Martínez Sánchez clarified these will not be adjacent like the destroyed units: «Two will be on the lower platform and two on the upper.»

The Fuel Marketing Company is the investor for works including approximately two kilometres of perimeter fencing and seven kilometres of asphalt access roads to the tanks. The new tanks feature greater separation distances and a modern lightning protection system.
Labour at this strategic site aims to transform the terminal and entire industrial zone into a sufficiently robust economic sector – less vulnerable and with a more modern image.
A major technologically driven investment was conceived for this purpose, with enhanced operational safety as the primary objective and key variable.
