Lula in excellent health, says medical team in Brazil

President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva is now fully recovered from the head injury he suffered on 9 December, Dr Roberto Kalil, the doctor in charge of his care, told CNN Brazil.

Lula was discharged last night after undergoing routine examinations at the Syrian-Lebanese hospital in Sao Paulo.

Asked about the head injury, Kalil replied that «the lesions are gone».

He explained that the ruler «underwent many examinations that make up an annual check-up, which he did not do before because of the domestic accident he suffered in December. All of them have shown that the president’s state of health is excellent,» he remarked.

The doctor also assured that Lula is free to travel within Brazil and abroad.

The Syrian-Lebanese published a new bulletin on the president’s health at 23:50 (local time).

The document confirmed the positive picture and indicated that all the tests performed are within the normal range, including the cranial tomography for postoperative control.

«The president continues with the usual medical follow-up, with no new tests scheduled, by the medical teams led by professor and doctor Roberto Kalil Filho and doctor Ana Helena Germoglio,» the bulletin concludes.

Late in the afternoon of 9 December, Lula felt a headache and indisposition and was admitted to an exclusive health centre in Brasilia.

This was due to the blow he suffered to his head after falling in October in one of the bathrooms of the Alvorada Palace (the capital’s official presidential residence), which caused an injury to the back of his head.

After imaging tests, it was found that surgery was necessary and he was transferred to the Sirio-Libanês in Sao Paulo.

There he underwent emergency surgery, which was carried out without complications.

He underwent two medical interventions, on 10 and 12 December, as well as a third procedure to remove a drain from his head.

Lula is scheduled to participate this Friday and tomorrow in the festivities for the 45th anniversary of the Workers’ Party (PT), in the state of Rio de Janeiro.

«It will be a very special celebration to commemorate the anniversary of the party that built a long history of fighting for the rights of the people, defending democracy and building a fairer Brazil,» a PT statement said.

Under the slogan «Roots in the people. Eyes on the future», the commemoration will be marked this Friday by relevant debates, culture, gastronomy and a big popular party.

According to the announced agenda, the progressive leader will attend tomorrow the political act for the 45th anniversary of the PT, together with leaders, representatives of allied parties and popular movements.
