José Martí, the one who illuminates

The 6th International Conference For the Balance of the World will take place in Havana from 28 to 31 January. «With all and for the good of all».

What is good if not noble action, respect for all beings, the triumph of generosity over harm, magnanimous constancy, the absence of pettiness…? «The good of the many is preferable to the opulence of the few», said José Martí, and, in pursuit of this goal, he put soul and word, thought and heart into it.

From childhood, the altruistic gesture and early promises of justice; in adolescence, imprisonment, exile and a sharp pen for verse and denunciation; always a patriot; the owner of an enlightened word that shone in poetry, narrative, essays, oratory, journalism, epistles and art criticism. He spoke of Our America with a solicitous son’s possession; with love for the species, he saw in the word «Homeland» the whole of Humanity. Without social exclusions, he counted «with all and for the good of all», as the most effective formula of triumphant love.

The probity of his life was total, marked by adversities typical of those who look to the high mountains, but focused on a greater will, that of the freedom of Cuba. He died for it, facing the sun, just as he had predicted, and this Cuban of universal stature, who is for every compatriot, decorum, ethics, the idea of good, resembles nothing more than the sun.

It is not surprising then that Martí is a figure increasingly studied throughout the world. The world’s leading intellectuals are fully aware of the need to project his thought.

In a few days’ time, some 650 delegates from more than 80 countries will gather at the Havana Convention Palace to take part in the 6th International Conference For the Balance of the World. «With all and for the good of all». The event, which will take place from 28-31 January, will host some twenty scientific events, and is dedicated to dialogue between civilisations and the culture of peace.

Organised by the José Martí Project of International Solidarity, and with the support of Unesco and other international platforms, the conference is taking place as part of the national and international day De Cara al Sol, which commemorates the 130th anniversary of the fall in combat of the Cuban National Hero, and which is promoted by the Office of the Martiano Programme, all the Martian institutions in Cuba and the José Martí Project of International Solidarity.
