International Week of Solidarity with Cuba Announced

The World Federation of Trade Unions (WFTU) has called for an International Week of Action in Solidarity with Cuba, to take place from 6 to 12 April, as part of an urgent appeal to its affiliated organisations and the class-oriented trade union movement globally.

According to a statement from the WFTU Secretariat, the initiative arises in a context of worsening economic and energy conditions on the island, linked to the tightening of the blockade imposed by the United States. The trade union organisation denounces that this policy seeks to «strangle the Cuban economy» and directly affect the living conditions of the working class.

The document stresses that, despite repeated United Nations General Assembly resolutions against the blockade, Washington not only maintains these measures but has intensified them, including restrictions on fuel supplies, which has impacted the energy crisis facing the country.

Concrete Solidarity Actions

The WFTU instructs its members to organise, during that week, rallies, mobilisations and demonstrations outside United States embassies, as well as to develop an international fundraising campaign for medicines and medical supplies intended to support the Cuban people.

The resources raised will be channelled through the Cuban Workers’ Federation (CTC), with the purpose of alleviating difficulties in workplaces affected by electricity and fuel shortages.

Likewise, the appeal emphasises the need to take the message of solidarity to workplaces, as part of an organised response from the international workers’ movement.

The WFTU’s call coincides with a growing international solidarity movement with Cuba. In recent weeks, various social and trade union organisations in Latin America have denounced the impact of the blockade and expressed their support for the island.

Groups in El Salvador, for example, signed a public proclamation describing the blockade as a «criminal siege» and holding the United States responsible for its effects on the Cuban population.

Similarly, initiatives such as the «Our America» international convoy, made up of activists from several countries, brought humanitarian aid to Cuba, including medicines and solar panels, in response to the energy and supply crisis.

The largest island in the Antilles faces shortages of food, medicines and frequent blackouts, a situation that has increased international solidarity and which it deeply appreciates in the form of such initiatives.

In its message, the WFTU insists that solidarity «cannot be limited to statements», but must be translated into immediate material support and concrete actions that help confront the effects of the blockade.

«Hands off Cuba! Cuba is not alone!» concludes the appeal, reaffirming the need to strengthen unity and international cooperation in defence of the island’s sovereignty.
