Industriales secured their ticket to the post-season of the III Elite Cuban Baseball League, despite splitting wins with Ciego de Avila, thanks to Granma’s double defeat against the unbeatable Leñadores de Las Tunas.
In the first duel of the day at the Latino, the Tigres won 9-5 thanks to a two-run homer by the emerging Jorge Luis Contreras with two aboard. Yunier Batista shined from the bullpen with three flawless innings, while Fernando Betanzo took the cross.
The capital responded in the second game and came from behind to win 5-4. Dairon Miranda got the ball out with one on base and Ariel Sanchez cleared the bases with a game-saving double. Raymond Figueredo, despite a shaky start, held on for the complete game win.
At the same time, Las Tunas showed no mercy and swept Granma at home, with scores of 13-2 and 9-8. The Alarcón brothers did their part: Yordanis drove in four with three huge hits in the first, while Yosvani sealed the second game with a golden home run in the tenth.
Santiago de Cuba also did their thing: after falling 6-8 in the first game against Pinar, they reacted with a 9-2 thrashing in the closing game. Eduardo García stole the show with a grand slam and six runs batted in, to remain the tournament leader in that category with 40.
With these results, Las Tunas (19-8) leads the standings, followed by Ciego de Avila (22-13), Industriales (19-20), Santiago (15-20), Pinar del Rio (16-23) and Granma (14-21).
