Immigration on agenda, Mayorkas travels to southern U.S. border

U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas will travel today to Eagle Pass, Texas, to check the situation on the porous southern border.

While in the southern state, Mayorkas will meet with Customs and Border Protection personnel, including the heads of the Border Patrol, as well as local officials.

On December 27, Mayorkas traveled to Mexico along with Secretary of State Antony Blinken and White House Homeland Security Advisor Liz Sherwood-Randall to meet with President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador to jointly address the immigration crisis impacting both countries. Earlier, President Joe Biden spoke with López Obrador and during the conversation the two leaders agreed that «additional law enforcement measures are urgently needed.

According to data from federal authorities, there were more than two million migrant encounters at the U.S. southern border in fiscal years 2022 and 2023, and the influx now shows no signs of slowing.

Nearly a quarter of a million undocumented migrants crossed the border in November alone, a new high for the month and the third highest total in history.

Border security remains a vulnerability for Biden in election year 2024 and Republicans blame the Democrat for the problems at the line separating the U.S. and Mexico.

Mayorkas’ trip comes two days before a public hearing in House Republicans’ impeachment maneuver against the official, whom they blame for negligence in border management.
