Ignacio Agramonte: immense legacy as an everyday route

A representation of young Camagüeyans gathered today at the site of Potrero de Jimaguayú, located in the municipality of Vertientes, some 32 kilometres southwest of this city, the place where Major General Ignacio Agramonte y Loynaz fell in combat 152 years ago.

At the culmination of the Agramonte Historical Route, an initiative in which they delved into the life and work of the patriot, they also highlighted his immense legacy that becomes a daily guide for the children of the region.

More than a hundred participants in the meeting, held in the emblematic place of the local geography, in the presence of the highest provincial and municipal authorities, historians, directors and guests, talked about the wide imprint he left, despite his short existence, after the tribute to El Mayor, next to the obelisk that commemorates his death during the struggle for the independence of Cuba.

Heinier Lian Carvajo Baxter, first secretary of the Provincial Committee of the Young Communist League (UJC) in Camagüey, stressed that the historical journey was very profitable, because with the attendance of children and adolescents, they learned a little more about the love life of Ignacio Agramonte with Amalia Simoni, the unconditional friendship towards Brigadier Julio Sanguily, as well as his great military skills, among other passages of his career.

The route, which began on May 6, covered seven municipalities of the territory, and in each demarcation, more young people joined, which allowed them to deepen and make their own the exemplarity and consecration of the Camagüey bayardo, to continue the path of the Revolution, he said.

Yesángel Acosta Otaño, boxing coach at the Escuela de Iniciación Deportiva (EIDE) Cerro Pelado, in Camagüey, where he is the secretary of the UJC base committee, described this event as a memorable experience. He highlighted El Mayor’s courage and honour as fundamental values that he will share with his students, which will drive them to compete in the upcoming Games.

For her part, Karleidis Sánchez, on behalf of a group of young people from the Territorial Directorate of the Cuban Telecommunications Company, said that these were truly days of encounter with the history of Camagüey, of which Ignacio Agramonte is an essential figure, and highlighted the opportunity to share with other of his contemporaries.

Noel Caballero Sosa, a student at the Centro Mixto Máximo Gómez Báez in this city, considered it an honour to be at the event, through which the historical route celebrated in Mangos de Baraguá, in the presence of the President of the Republic, Miguel Díaz-Canel, was replicated in the province.

With Agramonte’s shame and the love he gave to his wife Amalia, it is up to us to multiply this type of space throughout the province, full of history, said the future journalist, referring to the contributions of the initiative.

The various examples of unconditional love for the homeland, for the family, Agramonte’s example for the youth of today, his mastery of the practice of law, responsibility, and various qualities that make him one of the most important personalities in the history of Cuba, stood out during the discussion among the arguments of several professors, scholars of Ignacio’s work, and guests, which become compelling reasons to keep him present every day.

At the end of the Agramontina Historical Route, the UJC presented the Siempre Joven (Always Young) award to a group of young people outstanding in economic and social tasks of impact, and received them from the hands of Walter Simón Noris, first secretary of the Communist Party of Cuba in Camagüey, Jorge Sutil Sarabia, Governor, and leaders of the youth organisation.
