Heavy rains hit northern Ciego de Avila province

Significant accumulations of locally heavy and intense rainfall on Tuesday in the northern part of the province of Ciego de Avila affected several houses in the city of Morón, especially those located in low-lying and poorly drained areas.

Alberto Echemendía Manzanares, first secretary of the party in Morón, together with Celia María López Reyes, president of the Municipal Assembly of People’s Power, and Yanet Mora Celsa, vice-president, visited flooded areas such as the Peñaranda distribution area, as well as the communities of El Paraíso and Loma Ciega.

In addition, a house in Avellaneda Street between Maceo and Goicuría, in the northern district, is reported to have partially collapsed due to the intensity of the rainfall and wind, associated with the trough that is affecting the territory.

To have an indicator of the heavy rainfall during the current day, meteorologist Frank Fernández Castañeda reflects from his profile on the social network Facebook that the automatic weather station (EMA) of Punta Alegre, Chambas, recorded at noon 113.6 millimetres (mm) of accumulated rainfall since 8:00 am.

Other significant rainfall values on Tuesday were recorded in the town of Falla, municipality of Chambas, where 50 mm fell in just one hour.

The atmospheric instability in the north of the island and the cay was preceded since Monday, as reported by the Provincial Meteorological Centre until 8:00 am today its network of stations showed records such as: Cayo Coco: 159.8 mm (106.9 mm between 6:00 pm and 7:00 pm), Punta Alegre: 94.4 mm and Bolivia: 52.2 mm.

Through the network of the National Institute of Hydraulic Resources, the highest accumulations were reported in the rain gauges of the Tanque Elevado de Turiguanó, Morón, with 92.4 mm, followed by CITMA Júcaro with 65.3 mm, and Tanque de Cayo Coco with 62 mm.

In addition, a severe local storm was recorded in the Cayo Coco EMA, characterised by strong winds, with a maximum wind gust of 110.9 km/h at 7:25 p.m. on Monday.

These precipitations are associated with the presence of a trough with representation in the different levels of the troposphere and extended over the eastern Gulf of Mexico, as Cuba remains in the humid upward flow from the southwest.

According to the specialists of the province of Ciego de Avila, these bad weather conditions will change for tomorrow Wednesday, to forecast a partly cloudy day with occasional clouds and the occurrence of isolated showers, in the afternoon, towards zones of the south coast.
