Government Commission Analyses Demographic Trends in Cuba

The Government Commission for Demographic Dynamics examined the Maternal-Child Programme and early childhood centres, reported Granma newspaper.

Manuel Marrero Cruz, Prime Minister of Cuba, chaired the meeting which analysed population trends, early childhood care facilities, and demographic measures in Granma province.

Reinol García Moreiro, Deputy Minister of Public Health, stated birth rates continue declining. He reported 148 of Cuba’s 168 municipalities now have maternity homes. García Moreiro emphasised the need for local solutions for pregnant women.

Marrero Cruz noted infant mortality rates vary regionally. The Prime Minister urged systematic work to reduce this indicator. Cira Piñeiro Alonso, First Deputy Education Minister, reported persistent issues in nursery school classrooms.

Piñeiro Alonso specified some childcare centres have low enrolment. Marrero Cruz ordered integrating these institutions with existing nurseries to optimise resources. Granma Governor Yanetsy Terry Gutiérrez reported high adolescent fertility rates in the province.

Inés María Chapman Waugh, Deputy Prime Minister, demanded comprehensive attention to gender violence in Granma. Concluding, Marrero Cruz required reviewing procedures for homeless individuals: «This isn’t about confrontation, but assistance,» he declared.
