For more quality education in the province of Ciego de Ávila

The activities taking place in the province of Ciego de Avila in honour of International Workers’ Day on May Day are an incentive to continue improving the teaching and education process and to develop the political movement called For Quality Education.

The importance of these tasks was assessed at the provincial balance assembly of the National Union of Education, Science and Sport Workers (Sntecd), in which Niurka González Orberá, secretary general of the organisation in the country, called for an increase in initiatives from educational institutions, with a view to ensuring the colourfulness of the historic and traditional working class festival.

The trade unionist urged to strengthen the recognition of the most outstanding through the system of awards and honorary titles, through which several affiliates received the distinctions Rafael María de Mendive and Juan Tomás Roig, but the number of those who were encouraged last year was not enough, as it was known.

The debate also focused on the issue of preventing and tackling crime from within the labour collectives, and the need for greater links between trade union leaders and grassroots organisations to represent and defend workers’ interests.

Referring to the topics of the balance report, Ernesto Marrero Vegas, secretary general of Sntecd in the territory of Avila, said that «the main issues raised in the assemblies of members and representatives have been related to the process of bankarisation and the failure to meet the date of payment to workers established in the Collective Labour Agreements, with the main cause being the lack of liquidity in the bank branches».

At the meeting, the representatives of the Education Unions of the municipalities of Baraguá, Bolivia and Florencia were encouraged for their financial efficiency in fulfilling their contribution to the Homeland.
