Floral Tribute Honors Simón Bolívar on 242nd Birth Anniversary

A floral wreath was laid today at the statue of Simón Bolívar (1783-1830) in Old Havana, honoring the 242nd anniversary of the birth of «The Liberator of America.» The ceremony simultaneously commemorated three historic milestones: the 202nd anniversary of the Naval Battle of Lake Maracaibo (celebrated as Bolivarian Navy Day), and the 32nd anniversary of Havana’s Simón Bolívar House Museum.

Reinaldo Segovia, Minister Counselor of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela’s Embassy in Cuba, emphasized that before Bolívar’s immortal bronze likeness, participants reaffirmed their commitment to his ideals of sovereignty, regional integration, and resistance against oppression. He described the tribute as symbolizing how Bolívar’s legacy – ignited 242 years ago, victorious at Maracaibo two centuries past, celebrated through Venezuela’s Navy and preserved in Havana’s museum – continues burning brightly in the hearts of America’s free peoples.

The ceremony was attended by Luis García Trujillo, representing Cuba’s Foreign Ministry General Directorate for Latin America and the Caribbean, alongside other Cuban institutional leaders.

Bolívar, the Venezuelan military strategist and statesman, led the independence campaigns against Spanish rule for what are now Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador, Peru, Panama and Bolivia. His revolutionary leadership established him as the seminal figure of Spanish America’s emancipation.
