The integration of social policies in Cuba has prevention and the fight against crime as one of its main pillars, which is why adherence to the law has a special connotation when it comes to the rights of children, adolescents and young people.
The educational activities are being carried out in all the municipalities, while in the provincial capital they began at the «Pablo Elvio Pérez Cabrera» Urban Basic Secondary School where members of the Provincial Confrontation Group gave a talk on how to prevent drug use, as well as on the responsible use of digital platforms and computer security.
Lisy Galbán Rodríguez, Deputy Provincial Director of Justice and member of the Drug Subgroup, argued the importance of informative and prophylactic work, given the implications that the consumption of these addictive substances has for the health and wellbeing of families.
Representatives of the Public Prosecutor’s Office, the People’s Courts and the Family Defence Department of the Ministry of Justice, as well as the Union of Young Communists (UJC), the Federation of Cuban Women (FMC) and the Committees for the Defence of the Revolution (CDR) are also involved in such a noble and necessary effort.
Alexis Casaña Valdés, Provincial Coordinator of the CDRs, emphasised how revolutionary vigilance in the neighbourhood as well as in the «Mirando al mar» detachments are essential to thwart any attempt to encourage drug use in the country.
Ángel Aragón César, Coordinator of Programmes and Objectives of the Government of People’s Power in Ciego de Ávila, explained to INVASOR that this comprehensive national exercise is a follow-up to the first experience last December, and includes actions for the reincorporation of adolescents and young people in vulnerable situations into their studies.
Actions for the prevention of drug use are vital for the integration of the Comprehensive Policy for Children, Adolescents and Youth, including the National System of Comprehensive Care with the policy of the Cuban government and state to address demographic dynamics.
Closely related to drug use is, for example, the suicide rate in Ciego de Avila, which represents the ninth cause of death during the period 2019-2023, according to data provided by specialists from the Centre for Demographic Studies of the University of Havana in their most recent monitoring, control and training visit to the implementation of the Programme of Attention to Demographic Dynamics in this territory.
In fact, one of their recommendations was, precisely, to continue paying attention to dysfunctional manifestations such as suicide, gender violence and drug addiction, without neglecting vigilance regarding child labour and vagrants, among other negative trends that could proliferate in the province.
The situation of fines, electricity fraud and abusive prices, among other important indicators, is evaluated on a daily basis during the development of the second national integral exercise that will take place in Ciego de Avila until March 29th, as in the rest of the provinces of the country.
