The great northern wetland of Ciego de Ávila, second in extension and importance in our country and a Ramsar site since 2002, has great relevance for the municipality of Morón due to all that it contributes to this territory given its intrinsic characteristics, fundamentally related to the hydrological situation it presents. Among its most notable benefits stands out the possibility of assimilating the floods produced by rainfall even in other municipalities of the province.
At the same time, it is an important source of primary production with direct influence on other ecosystems, it is the habitat of numerous species, both migratory and autochthonous, and within it are inserted processes determinant for the country’s economy such as tourism development, fishing activity, livestock, agriculture and forestry.
It is for this reason that conserving and protecting the wetland is essential for our lives, and this stems from the very knowledge that we all must have about it, being aware of its enormous natural wealth that also belongs to us and that we do not always value in its just measure.
