Emanuel dos Santos: «Seeing Cuba Up Close Strengthens Our Solidarity»

Emanuel dos Santos, hailing from Rio Grande in southern Brazil, is experiencing Cuba for the first time—a journey he says is transforming his perspective. His visit isn’t coincidental but stems from a steadfast commitment to solidarity with the Cuban people.

As part of solidarity caravans and brigades that travel to Cuba, Emanuel seeks firsthand understanding of the island’s reality. For him, immersing himself in Cuban culture and daily life is essential to building informed, critical awareness.

«We read books, we’ve seen things on television, but I believe only real experience can bring true awareness of what Cuba is and the moment it’s living now,» Emanuel asserts. His testimony underscores the need to move beyond media and academic narratives to directly engage with Cubans’ realities—their struggles, achievements, and resilience.

«I’m a trade unionist back home; I represent workers, and for me, there’s no other path but unity to overcome the far-right and everything we’ve endured, even in Brazil. Lula faces immense challenges due to escalating imperialism,» he added.

«There’s a powerful connection between us, and we must nurture it. I want to share a vision of Cuba that’s completely different from what many imagine back home—so more Brazilians join this struggle.»

«We must walk together. Brazil and Cuba are so alike, brother. I’ve loved getting to know the people here—they’re joyful, celebratory, hardworking. As a Brazilian, I saw myself reflected in Cuba. The bond is profound.»

Emanuel dos Santos’ experience exemplifies how solidarity fosters knowledge and understanding, strengthening ties between peoples and promoting a more human, objective vision of Cuba.
