El Jupuro, located at the intersection of the Carretera Central and Honorato del Castillo Street, has reopened its doors, transformed into the province’s first neighbourhood market. The initiative forms part of the transformations envisaged in axis 19 of the 176 measures approved by the Cuban Government to boost commerce, gastronomy and services.
The reopening returns a traditional establishment to the people of Ciego de Ávila and, at the same time, incorporates a new conception of retail trade, aimed at bringing essential products closer to the population at more favourable prices.
The measure responds to the provisions of Resolution 16 of 2026 of the Ministry of Domestic Trade, which regulates the operation of neighbourhood markets and establishes mechanisms to favour more affordable prices for consumers.

One of the main novelties of this modality will be the possibility of making electronic payments through platforms such as Transfermóvil and EnZona.
This alternative will make operations more agile, reduce the time customers spend in the unit and contribute to better management of the flow of shoppers.
According to Resolution 16 of 2026, neighbourhood markets have a prioritised list of products — including food and hygiene items — whose sale receives a 5% tax incentive. This benefit affects the cost structure and makes it possible for products to reach the consumer at lower prices.
There are plans to progressively incorporate new essential items into this offer, with the aim of broadening the options available to families in the community.
The reopening of El Jupuro represents a step in the transformation of retail trade in Ciego de Ávila and places the province among the territories that are beginning to put the neighbourhood market model into practice, conceived to bring certain products closer to the population and favour more organised access and a more competitive offer.
