The titles El aroma del romero, by Yasmany Rodríguez Alfaro, and Amor con letras mayúsculas, by Eduardo Pino González, both from Ediciones Ávila, were nominated for the prestigious Reader’s Prize during the 33rd edition of the Havana International Book Fair (FIHL 2025).
These two nominated books are part of the new Vramontono collection and are among the 85 titles presented by the publishing house of the territory within the current Cuban book and literature festival in its worldwide projection, according to the Invasor digital newspaper.
«This is the first time that Ediciones Ávila has received a nomination for this award, and for us it is considered a great recognition of the work of the publishing house,» Natasha Cabrera Cepero, director of the Raúl Doblado del Rosario Centre for Literary Promotion and Ediciones Ávila, told the website.
She added that the Cazaluces collection, dedicated to children’s poetry, has also been a success, with its mini-books practically sold out just a few days before the fair.
She explained that six new titles were presented, including the winners of the 2023 Eliseo Diego Prize for Children’s Literature and Poetry, the printing of which was delayed due to a lack of supplies.
Ediciones Ávila’s programme of presentations at La Cabaña included the book Guardianes de Cassinga: la epopeya de los avileños, by Yeniska Martínez Díaz and Dagoberto Massip Puentes, with the participation of the Zimbabwean ambassador, Paul Chikawa; the wife of the Namibian ambassador, Esther Goagoseph; and Ángel Dalmau, vice-president of the Cuba Africa Friendship Association.
The novel Zumba la curiganga, by the Avileña writer Carmen Hernández Peña, first published by Letras Cubanas, and republished on this occasion by Ediciones Ávila, was also highlighted.
Among other novels at FIHL 2025 were Los cuentos de la abuela Guaya, by Pedro José Padilla, and Monstruos.com, by Alberto Fernández Copa, both winners of the Eliseo Diego Prize.
As part of the programme of the Avila delegation to the Havana International Book Fair, the Avila writer Masiel Mateos presented several of her titles already available at the Ediciones Ávila stand.
During the most important book and literature event in Cuba, Magda Alonso, bookseller and administrator of the municipality of Venezuela, who was invited to the International Meeting of Booksellers, received recognition.
The specialist from the southern territory of Avila was awarded best bookseller of the year in the province for the second consecutive year; undoubtedly a stimulus for her work, according to the local media.
After its participation in the capital of the Greater Antilles, Ediciones Ávila is preparing for the Ciego de Ávila Book Fair, which will take place from 13 to 16 March.
A new feature this year will be the Caribe Fantástico event, a Caribbean meeting of science fiction and fantasy writers, with the participation of important figures in these genres from the region and other provinces.
