Díaz-Canel presided over the commemoration of the 130th anniversary of the disembarkation of Maceo and other patriots, by Duaba
Duaba, Guantanamo – Honor returned expeditionary; Antonio and José Maceo, together with Flor Crombet and 20 patriots, in an exponential landing in Duaba; they and the daring episode were commemorated. Now they are more, they are copious youth. They are thousands.
They were seen as they were this April 1st, fused with Cuba, in Duaba. This is where the island made its pilgrimage, in Baracoan style. This is where it marched when the sun began to warm the walls of the city.
It was a four-kilometre pilgrimage, from Primero de Abril Street to the obelisk in memory of the disembarkation. Children, students, young people, middle-aged to elderly men and women, and people from all walks of life marched. By the vigour of the steps, they were «in a tight square, like silver at the roots of the Andes».
In front, the Cuban flag; in a loud voice, loyalty and continuity. The march is the longest-lived of its kind in the country; it has been repeated every 1st April since 1903.
Yesterday, the First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Party and President of the Republic, Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez, was at the front, early as the sun, accompanied by the member of the Political Bureau and Secretary of Organisation of the Central Committee, Roberto Morales Ojeda, and by the provincial authorities.
Speaking for everyone, for Cuba and the future, Meyvis Estévez Echevarría, leader of the current Cuban youth, stressed the importance of that landing, of the path opened that day, of the example of those who gave everything for the independence of the nation.
In Baracoa, the streets were taken over by the people, in view of the symbol of Hatuey, at the highest point of the city.
Just as there is a Light of Yara, the legend of the martyrdom of the rebel chieftain, there is another full of heroism and intense brightness, which has shone brightly every April 1st since 1895: the Light of Duaba. (Author: José Llamos Camejo)
