Distinguished musician Nelson Oney remembered in Morón

The artistic work and musical legacy of Nelson Oney was highlighted at a musical gathering held at the house museum of collector Lázaro Efren Álvarez in the city of Morón, with the special invitation of his son Dayron Oney, current director of the famed group La Familia.

On the life and work of Nelson Oney, who passed away in December 2023, some of those present spoke, among them, Larry Morales Rodríguez, writer, historian and researcher and author of several books on local history.

“Oney was a person who from a very young age was linked to music, as at only 19 years old he joined the General Staff Band in Santa Clara and the Modern Music Orchestra of Las Villas,” specified Efrén Álvarez, synthesising passages from the artistic life of a man who had the occasion to work with great masters like Rafael Somavilla and Osmundo Calzado, among others.

For his part, Dayron Oney, his son, narrated anecdotes and experiences about this distinguished musician, his work in the country and abroad, who one day decided to return to the city of Morón and create the Group La Familia, which in a short time achieved recognised popularity.

As a close to the gathering, Dayron performed on his trumpet unforgettable pieces from the national and international repertoire. (Author: Leonel Iparraguirre González)
