The distinguished theatre, cinema, radio and television actor Carlos Quintas passed away on Sunday evening at the age of 83, as reported by various media, including the Communications Directorate of Cuban Television and the Agencia Caricatos.
Born on 4th November 1941 in Santiago de Cuba, he developed an extensive career beginning in 1959 at the former Radio Hernández station in his native province, where he worked as a presenter, reciter and in leading roles of popular radio soap operas.
In 1961, he studied at the Academy of Dramatic Art of Oriente and was a founder of the Dramatic Ensemble of Oriente; and among the theatre works in which he participated are Contigo pan y cebolla, Los invasores, Santiago 57 — presented at the first Latin American Theatre Festival of Havana — and La invasión, in the second edition.
In 1967, he moved to Havana and worked at the Radio Progreso, CMQ and Radio Rebelde stations, later appearing on television with an active presence in remembered adventure series such as Los mambises, Juan Quinquín en Pueblo Mocho, El Halcón and Los comandos del silencio.
He also stood out in telenovelas such as El pagador de promesas, Café Habana, and La última mujer y el próximo combate, as well as in police series such as Día y noche and Tras la huella; among many other dramatised productions.
Carlos Quintas also exploited his humorous talents in spaces of great popular acceptance, Vivir del cuento, A otro con ese cuento and the comedy situations of the musical La descarga.
Various films and short films from the International Film and TV School of San Antonio de los Baños had in him a faithful collaborator, adds the note.
Furthermore, he was artistic director of shows for over 40 years, during which he undertook various national tours with diverse cultural institutions.
He received recognitions such as the ACTUAR Prize for Lifetime Achievement 2019, Meritorious Artist of Radio and Television, the Pequeña Pantalla Prize of Television, the Raúl Gómez García Medal, the Founder Diploma of the Cuban Institute of Radio and Television, and the Seal of the Laureate of the National Union of Cultural Workers.
Carlos Quintas will be remembered for his acting versatility and his capacity to interpret characters in diverse genres.
For its part, the Agencia Caricatos joined in the grief and also sent condolences to family and friends, praising that the actor was much more than a talented artist: he was an exceptional human being, a dear colleague and an example of dedication and passion for the performing arts.
