Díaz-Canel held talks with his United Arab Emirates counterpart

Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez, First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba and President of the Republic, held a meeting with His Highness Sheikh Mohamed BinZayed Al Nahyan, President of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Emir of Abu Dhabi.

According to the website of the Presidency, the meeting on Wednesday was part of the Cuban president’s activities during his official working visit to the UAE, where he will also participate in the 28th Conference of the Parties (COP-28) of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, as well as the Summit of Leaders of the Group of 77 and China.

During the exchange with BinZayed Al Nahyan, both presidents noted the good state of relations between the two countries and the willingness to continue strengthening bilateral political dialogue».

The Head of State of the largest of the Antilles expressed interest in expanding and diversifying economic, trade, investment and cooperation ties, in accordance with the potentialities that exist in areas such as biotechnology, renewable energies, tourism, agriculture, among others.

Carlos Miguel Pereira Hernández, director general of Bilateral Affairs of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, described the dialogue as historic, and stressed that this is the first visit of a Cuban president to the UAE and also the first occasion on which the two leaders meet.

The diplomat added that among the fundamental results of the meeting was a great agreement to take relations to a new historic level.

Pereira Hernandez also noted that the exchange allowed a review of the main issues on the bilateral agenda, and was also an occasion to sign important agreements, which pave the way for a new stage of deepening bilateral ties.

Among the agreements signed, he explained, are the Agreement for the Promotion and Reciprocal Protection of Investments (APPRI), as well as the agreement to avoid double taxation, which would simplify tax procedures between businessmen and avoid tax evasion.

These are two very important agreements to support the business sector, said the diplomat, who also explained that among the results there were important agreements on climate change, tourism, science, technology and sports.

The Minrex official did not rule out that during the course of the official working visit, other agreements related to business exchanges and possible business deals could be signed.
