Deputies Meet with Avilanian Science Workers

Deputies to the National Assembly of People’s Power (ANPP) are meeting with workers from the Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment (CITMA) in the province of Ciego de Ávila, as part of the preparatory process for that body’s accountability session before the Cuban parliament, to be held this coming December.

During these encounters, the visitors receive an update on the functioning of various institutions subordinate to CITMA, the work results and the difficulties they face in performing their duties within this key sector for materialising the National Programme for Economic and Social Development.

Initially, the schedule of visits included exchanges at the Provincial Historical Archive, the Provincial Meteorological Centre (PMC) and the Centre for Information and Technological Management (CIGET), and the Territorial Unit for Standardisation, Metrology and Quality, where they observed the work processes and learned about the main motivations and concerns of these collectives.

Through its account on the social network Facebook, the Territorial Delegation of CITMA highlighted particularities of each meeting, with the purpose of keeping the people informed about this exercise.

At the Brigadier José Ambrosio Gómez Cardoso Provincial Historical Archive, they obtained details about the actions for rescuing the local historical memory and the activities carried out, jointly with other organisations, to expand knowledge about the principal events in this territory.

The representatives of the ANPP’s Commission for Education, Culture, Science, Technology and Environment expressed interest in the research being conducted to deepen knowledge about the main events and personalities of Avilanian history, as well as the channels for disseminating the results of these studies.

At the CIGET, they obtained specifics about the consultancy, advisory, analysis and comprehensive solution services in information management, knowledge, innovation, business intelligence and intellectual property.
While sharing with the PMC team, they were provided with detailed information on the strengthening of the early warning system in the province through international collaboration projects aimed at adaptation to climate change and capacity building for disaster risk reduction.

Oscar Antonio Benedico Rodríguez, director of that institution, explained that the network of meteorological stations comprises four conventional and five automatic devices that guarantee coverage for 70 percent of the Avilanian municipalities.

He specified that the automatic meteorological stations make it possible to obtain information in real time, which favours the data flow for decision-making aimed at protecting the population and the nation’s assets in cases of natural disasters.

With the help of technology, the Applied Meteorology Group offers specialised services of interest to prioritised sectors such as Agriculture and Tourism.

He also referred to the execution of science, technology and innovation projects, and to the communicative work they carry out through the mass media and social networks, with the objective of keeping the people informed about the behaviour of meteorological variables.

At the Territorial Unit for Standardisation, Metrology and Quality, the parliamentarians learned about the fulfilment of state assignments and the provision of services in different forms of economic management.
Raúl Ernesto Rivera Espinosa, director of that entity, emphasised that they addressed issues such as the sale of Cuban standards and subscription services, product certification, dissemination and promotion, and the behaviour of quality management system certification processes.

Likewise, they dialogued about hazard analysis and critical control point systems, the results of inspections and the work of Metrology in sectors such as Public Health, Tourism, Energy and Mines, Agri-food and Commerce, where they carry out verifications and calibrations of different equipment.

Furthermore, information was provided about the actions for awarding the Provincial Quality Prize, and they discussed the investment needs for improving the infrastructure, technology and transport at that centre.
This week the deputies will visit the Territorial Delegation of CITMA and the Centres for Environmental Engineering and Biodiversity (CIBA), and for Coastal Ecosystem Research (CIEC), with the interest of expanding their knowledge about this sector to accompany the CITMA accountability process before the ANPP.

It is also planned that they will tour protected areas to verify the functioning of these natural spaces of interest for the conservation of biodiversity and the development of scientific research aimed at preserving natural resources.
