According to a Facebook post by journalist José Miguel Solís, the installation of BESS (Battery Energy Storage Systems) is now underway in several Cuban electrical substations.
These so-called «concentrator units» will be installed at the Cueto 220, Bayamo 220, Cotorro 220 and Havana 220 substations. Each unit can store 50 MW.
«BESS are systems that store electrical energy in batteries for later use, particularly in renewable generation like solar,» the post explains.
In solar projects, BESS stores excess energy produced during daylight hours to supply power when generation is low (for example, at night) or when demand is high. This enables a ore stable and continuous power supply while optimising solar energy use.
Additionally, BESS typically use lithium-ion batteries for their high energy density and low maintenance requirements. The systems include not just batteries but also inverters, management and control systems that coordinate charging and discharging to ensure efficiency and safety.
«BESS facilitate the integration of renewable energies into the electrical grid by mitigating the inherent intermittency of solar and wind power, improving energy supply stability and resilience,» concludes the post.
