Cuba’s Informatics Union Drives Digital Transformation

The Union of Informatics Professionals of Cuba (UIC) commenced its 2025 National Conference at Havana’s Convention Centre this Tuesday. The event, concluding today, examines key achievements in innovation, training, and project management amid global technological advances and emerging regulations.

María Esther Alfonso Suárez, First Vice President of UIC, highlighted in her opening remarks the organisation’s recognition as Cuba’s top civil society entity for two consecutive years. She emphasised its expanded role in national and international projects and its contribution to the country’s technological development.

UIC enhanced its impact through initiatives like digital banking integration and public health campaigns with the Ministry of Public Health (Minsap). Its accession to ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) has facilitated global projects including free Internet Governance courses. Alfonso Suárez noted persistent challenges in member data updates and specialised support services.

Liber González Vilela, Technology Vice President, reported 25 of 27 targets met since the 2023 General Assembly. Progress includes digital platforms and cybersecurity improvements, though critical migrations remain pending due to resource constraints.

Tatiana Delgado Fernández, Innovation Vice President, detailed nine national projects, including AI laboratories and gender-focused initiatives. She acknowledged the expanded reach of the co-Lab network while noting export barriers for technological solutions.

Attendees included Yudí Rodríguez Hernández (Member of the Communist Party Central Committee Secretariat and Head of Service Management), alongside Ernesto Rodríguez Hernández and Aylin Febles Estrada (First Deputy Minister and Deputy Minister of Communications respectively).

The conference concludes today with debates on internal operations, training, knowledge management, and presentation of new regulations. UIC thereby reaffirms its commitment to Cuba’s digital transformation and sustainable development.
