Cuban Women’s Federation anniversary celebrations continue

On the eve of the 64th anniversary of the Cuban Women’s Federation (FMC), celebrations continue today in the country on the occasion of the creation of this mass organisation on 23 August 1960.

During the recent days, in every province of Cuba, movements were organised to support food production, sports marathons, cultural festivals, agricultural fairs, meetings between generations of federates, tributes to founders and tributes to outstanding women, among other actions.

Thus, with the participation of all the people, from Artemisa, Havana and Mayabeque, to Granma, Santiago de Cuba and Guantanamo, Cubans celebrate the anniversary of the Federation, founded to promote the emancipation and equal rights of women.

Based on this founding principle that has become law, Cuban women now aim to turn the organisation into an attractive, useful and relevant space for young women and, in this way, guarantee their active and transformative participation in society.

Differentiating attention to women, according to their age, educational level, social sector, orientation and interests, and other characteristics, is another of the FMC’s challenges to achieve this objective.

Likewise, renewing its communication system, applying science in all areas of work, stimulating the incorporation into employment, promoting women’s empowerment, increasing the capacity to mobilise, dealing with the problems of adolescents, young women and adults in virtual and physical environments.

All these challenges, plus others such as the everlasting confrontation with machismo and gender violence, are also debated in workshops, panels and forums organised on the occasion of the anniversary.

In particular, in Villa Clara, Vanguardia Nacional province and the venue of the national event for the founding of the FMC, voluntary work will be carried out this Thursday at the Valle del Yabú agricultural company.

The day’s agenda also includes a meeting at the La Estrella Tobacco Collection and Processing Company in the municipality of Manicaragua and an exchange with prominent women federates at the Casa de Orientación a la Mujer y la Familia (Women and Family Orientation Centre) in Santa Clara.

Tomorrow, according to reports from that territory, «there will be an exchange of flowers at the Mausoleum in Ernesto Che Guevara Square and the central event, in which some two thousand women federates are expected to participate».
