Cuban President urges to strengthen unity

Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez, First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba (PCC) and President of the Republic, urged to strengthen unity as a priority of the revolutionary government, during the closing day of the International Meeting of Solidarity with Cuba and Against Imperialism.

Díaz-Canel Bermúdez thanked the personalities present at the event, with whom he shared the feeling of human solidarity and struggle with the peoples and their emancipation.

The Cuban President highlighted the presence of young members of the First of May International Brigade of Voluntary Work and Solidarity with Cuba, as well as the trade union organisations that were present, which ratifies that the Caribbean nation is not alone and continues to be a point of reference for the new generations.

Regarding the International Meeting of Solidarity with Cuba and Against Imperialism, he stressed that it served as a platform for updating action plans in favour of promoting peace and the sovereignty of the peoples.

He said that during the intense days of debate, friends from different organisations were honoured, the work of the Latin American and Caribbean Continental Network of Solidarity with Cuba was celebrated, as well as the 40th anniversary of the Cuba Friendship Society in Australia and the 30th anniversary of the Canadian Che Guevara Brigade.

The event is taking place at a time of complexity for the country, with serious threats to world peace where poverty and the effects of climate change are increasing, he said.

Similarly, one cannot be indifferent to events such as the genocide in Palestine and the assassination attempts against Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro.

The Cuban leader reiterated his support for the Palestinian students living in the archipelago, the Saharawi and Syrian peoples and the young people demonstrating in US universities who are victims of police brutality.

He recognised, as other priorities of the Cuban government, the strengthening of ideological work and the implementation of economic measures that will lead to a certain stability.

Regarding the economic, commercial and financial blockade, he said that the struggle will continue until the United States lifts this cruel and immoral policy.

Fernando González Llort, president of the Cuban Institute of Friendship with the Peoples, explained that those present will be able to convey to their respective countries the truth of a nation that is currently experiencing the aftermath of the pandemic, a global crisis and a media campaign whose messages of hatred seek a social explosion.

González Llort emphasised the illegal occupation of the Guantánamo Naval Base, the accentuation of the consequences of Cuba’s inclusion on the list of countries sponsoring terrorism and the harmful effects of the unilateral measures imposed by the great empire of the North.

The meeting was attended by Ulises Guilarte de Nacimiento, member of the Political Bureau and Secretary General of the Cuban Workers’ Central (CTC), and representatives of the Party, the Government and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The International Meeting of Solidarity with Cuba and Against Imperialism, which began on 30 April, was attended by more than 1,100 participants from different countries.

The meeting paid homage to the centenary of the physical disappearance of the leader of the world proletariat Vladimir Ilich Lenin, and to the 171st anniversary of the birth of the National Apostle José Martí, the 85th anniversary of the Constitution of the CTC and the 65th anniversary of the triumph of the Revolution.
