Cuban jumper Aniel Molina wins silver at Luxembourg Meeting

Cuban athlete Aniel Adrián Molina Gómez claimed the silver medal today at the International Meeting of Luxembourg, leaping 7.78 metres in the men’s long jump final, a Category D event on the World Athletics circuit.

With this result, Molina finished behind Jamaica’s Shawn Thompson, who took gold with 8.00 metres, while Britain’s Raihau Maiau secured bronze with 7.63 metres.

The young athlete from Matanzas province recorded the following progression: X / 6.10 / 7.48 / X / X / 7.78, with a legal wind reading of 0.0 metres per second, as reported by the competition’s official website.

Hailing from Limonar municipality in Matanzas, Molina saved his best attempt for the final round, though he fell short of matching his personal bests of 8.13 and 8.11 metres achieved last July at Havana’s Pan American Stadium.

At just 21 years old, Molina remains in contention to qualify for the 2025 Tokyo World Championships through rankings and is considered one of Cuban athletics’ top prospects for the 2025 Junior Pan American Games in Asunción (9-23 August).

Also representing Cuba, Olympic bronze medallist Maykel Massó finished fifth with 7.27 metres, recording the following series: 6.99 / 7.26 / 7.21 / – / 7.16 / 7.27. Massó’s season best remains the 8.05 metres he achieved at the recent Copa Cuba.

In other events, discus thrower Mario Alberto Díaz delivered an outstanding performance with a 67.44-metre throw – a new personal record and the fourth-best mark in Cuban history. According to journalist Carlos Manuel Bernal, Díaz came just six centimetres short of the Tokyo qualifying standard and has strengthened his position in the qualification zone.
