Cuban Customs thwarts attempt to smuggle cigars

The General Customs of the Republic of Cuba (AGRC) recently thwarted an attempt to illicitly export more than four thousand 400 loose cigars with bands, detected at the José Martí International Airport, in this capital, during a routine baggage check.

William Pérez González, First Vice Head of the AGRC, informed from his account on the social network X that the cargo had not been declared to the customs authorities and that the case was referred to the National Revolutionary Police for the initiation of corresponding investigations.

The official indicated this Monday that the smuggling of cigars, whether original or counterfeit, constitutes a highly lucrative business on the illegal international market, given the elevated demand for this product associated with the Cuba Brand.

The seizure is part of the permanent actions of control, prevention and confrontation of crime, corruption and illegalities that Customs develops, in coordination with other state control and security organs.

In recent months, the AGRC has detected other smuggling attempts at the country’s entry and exit points, including drugs hidden in containers for everyday use, gold in ingots and sums of money that exceed the legal limits for their export.

The authorities reiterated the call to strictly comply with customs regulations and warned that they will continue reinforcing vigilance to protect the patrimony and image of Cuban products abroad.
