Cuba reiterates zero-tolerance policy on drugs

The Cuban government ratified its policy of zero tolerance to drug production, trafficking and consumption during the most recent session of the Council of Ministers, according to an official communication released today.

An article in the Granma newspaper reveals that this was one of the topics on the agenda of the meeting, led by the president of the Antillean nation, Miguel Díaz-Canel, and directed by the prime minister, Manuel Marrero.

In an international scenario marked by the increase in drug production and consumption, Cuba is reinforcing its Zero Tolerance policy, with a strategy based on a balance of actions to prevent and combat the scourge, the text notes.

At the meeting, Colonel Juan Carlos Poey, head of the Ministry of the Interior’s specialised anti-drugs body, assured that the Antillean country maintains its willingness to continue collaborating with international organisations in this area.

At the same time, the publication adds, it fulfils «the commitments assumed as a state party to the three international conventions in force».

The strategy followed to confront the problem is based on «preventive, educational, social inclusion, popular community participation, treatment, rehabilitation and accessible health policies, universal and without discrimination of any kind,» it said.

«As part of the actions that have been carried out, he referred to the proposal to create a National Drugs Observatory, which will provide the country with real, objective and reliable information on supply, demand and the response to the drug situation,» he said, according to the source.

In this respect, the Prime Minister stated that «we must all join in the fight against drugs, including families, and ensure that the population understands the risks involved».

Promoting a greater number of exports, boosting national production, advancing the process of bankarisation and strengthening the business system were other issues discussed at the meeting.

Issues related to the application of popular and institutional control, the proper execution of the state budget and attention to the country’s demographic dynamics were also discussed.
