Cuba remains vigilant today in the face of hydro-meteorological events that threaten its territory and implements measures to protect the population and economic resources.
The government at all levels, as well as agencies and institutions are keeping a close watch on the wide area of low pressure concentrated south of Jamaica and the disturbance located north of the Lesser Antilles.
The urgency is particularly concentrated in the eastern region, recently affected by Hurricane Oscar, which is why last Saturday the National General Staff of Civil Defence decided to establish an Information Phase for heavy rains for the provinces of Guantanamo, Santiago de Cuba, Holguin, Granma and Las Tunas.
This Sunday, the body also decreed an Information Phase for the provinces of Camagüey, Ciego de Avila, Sancti Spíritus, Cienfuegos, Villa Clara, Matanzas, Mayabeque, Havana, Artemisa, Pinar del Río and the Special Municipality of Isla de la Juventud.
He explained that according to information from the Forecast Centre of the Institute of Meteorology, the area of low pressure located in the south of the western Caribbean Sea, shows a better organization and increases the probability of the formation of a tropical cyclonic organism in the next 12 to 24 hours.
Meanwhile, in Guantánamo, more than 60,000 people have been evacuated, including inhabitants of the municipalities already hit by Hurricane Oscar a fortnight ago, whose soils are saturated as a result of heavy rainfall and rising rivers.
Educational institutions and other facilities, as well as the homes of relatives, are serving as temporary shelter for these people.
The president of the National Defence Council, Miguel Díaz-Canel, is permanently monitoring this situation, and indicated that he will maintain total vigilance and ensure direct communication with the population.
