Cuba alerts to aviary flu threat

The National Center for Animal Health (CENASA) alerts breeders and the population in general about the proximity and possible appearance in Cuba of aviary flu, due to the spread of this disease throughout all continents.

Attached to the Ministry of Agriculture, CENASA indicates that so far in Cuba there are no reports of the presence of the pathogen, which is highly contagious and can affect wild birds as well as poultry, and can even be transmitted to humans.

The health alert specifies that the greatest danger for Cuba is in migratory birds, which at this time of the year nest or cross the national territory on their routes to the north or south of the continent, hence the control and surveillance measures applied in all provinces.

CENASA recommends avoiding contact between wild birds and poultry farms, extreme biosecurity measures in poultry facilities and prohibits the movement of sick birds.

Cuba adopts measures against aviary influenza

In view of the increase of cases of aviary flu in the region and the possibility that the disease may enter Cuba, the National Center for Animal Health (CENASA) has adopted a group of preventive measures.

Among the actions are an increase in epidemiological surveillance for early detection and timely response to the potential threat to animal health with an impact on public health.

Other measures include avoiding contact between wild birds and poultry flocks, extreme biosecurity measures in poultry centers, prohibiting the transfer of sick birds and, in the case of birds obtained by hunting, avoiding the transfer of birds to homes and disinfecting the means used.

Cuban health authorities indicate that any symptoms of the disease or the death of birds should be reported immediately.
