The Central de Trabajadores de Cuba calls journalists and editors of written press, radio, television, cable agencies and correspondents to the XXXXII edition of the Journalism Award «Primero de Mayo 2025», which is awarded annually on the occasion of the celebration of the International Workers’ Day.
The prize will be awarded to works that express the role of the Cuban trade union movement as a representative of workers’ interests and participation in the tasks programmed by the CTC.
Prizes will also be awarded to those publications whose content highlights the work of workers, as part of the effort in favour of a prosperous and sustainable economy to create values and provide efficient services to the population.
The CTC’s May Day Journalism Prize will be awarded to those works that have the greatest impact and make a significant contribution to the development of revolutionary consciousness in the current stage of the country’s development.
II. Works of all journalistic genres, published from March 1, 2024 to February 28, 2025, based on examples of outstanding labour collectives and workers, may be submitted. They must reflect trade union activity, indissolubly linked to the work of workers and, fundamentally, those related to:
-Concrete examples of the participation of the trade union movement in the updating of the economic model and the task ordering, achievements and causes of shortcomings.
-The organic process of the 22nd Congress of the Central de Trabajadores de Cuba, its behaviour in the basic assemblies with the affiliates and the main issues addressed by the workers in the municipal, provincial and national Trade Union Conferences.
-The efforts of the workers and labour collectives committed to the emulative movement aimed at fulfilling the plan and the budget and at exploiting the efficiency reserves in the workplaces and the quality of services.
-The interventions and spaces of workers and their representatives in the context of economic transformations, in the process of planning and control of plans.
-The implementation of employment and wage policy in the enterprise system: The behaviour of the linking of wages to results. The payment of profit sharing in the increase of workers’ incomes and the participation of the trade union in the development and enforcement of regulations.
Prospects of the Cuban economy – challenges and challenges. Samples and behaviour of the socialist state enterprise and the new forms of non-state management in the economy: The role of the trade union in the development of these projects and in the face of the characteristics of the Foreign Investment Law and its impact on society.
-The development of bankarisation and its impact on society and the country’s economy. Food prices. The process of improvement in the Ministry of Domestic Trade.
-Efforts and initiatives in the face of the effects of the blockade. The participation of the trade union movement in the battles against the ravages of cyclones and heavy rains, attitudes of solidarity and altruism.
-The application of employment and wage policy in the enterprise system: The behaviour of the linking of wages to results. The payment of profit sharing in the increase of workers’ income and the participation of the Union in the elaboration and enforcement of regulations.
-The National Association of Innovators and Rationalisers in the current context. Its work in promoting production plans and services, production of spare parts, saving material resources, especially energy carriers and replacing traditional energies with renewable energies, as well as import substitution.
-The strengthening of the Labour Justice Bodies and their procedure in labour disputes and workers’ claims. The formation and use of Collective Labour Agreements based on the new regulations of the Labour Code. Attention to people, safety and health at work.
Unionisation of state and non-state workers. The assemblies of members and workers, as well as those of representatives.
-Preservation of state property: The conduct of battles for economic, social and labour discipline. The fight against crime, illegalities, corruption, social indiscipline and the values of the workers, cadres and collectives. The workers’ guard and the actions of the internal control. Compliance with the Code of Ethics of the Cadres.
-Women and young workers in the construction of today’s Cuban society: in the defence of the homeland and as continuators of the Cuban revolutionary process.
-Cultural development and the integral training of workers. The history of the Cuban labour and trade union movement. The selfless contribution to health programmes.
-Martí, the workers, the continuity of the Apostle’s ideas on the working class, work, its role in society and the conscience of men.
-Moral values among workers and in labour collectives. The contribution to the Homeland and actions against subversion from the trade union organisations. The life and work of trade union leaders as an example to follow.
III. The twelve best journalistic works will be awarded. Prizes will not be awarded according to genre or media.
A Grand Prize will be selected from among the twelve best works selected by the jury.
The prize will also be awarded to the province with the best result in the competition.
The proposals for the competing works will be made by the Boards of Directors of the organs of the written press, radio, television, cable agencies, film news, the Executive Secretariats of the CTC and the Trade Unions at the different levels, as well as the UPEC in the provinces.
IV. Entries must be sent to the Education and Propaganda Department of the National CTC by 10 March 2025.
Proposals should specify:
1.Proposed journalistic work.
2.A detailed justification of the proposal in accordance with the criteria and themes of this document.
3.Three copies of the written press work must be sent with the proposal.
4.The publications submitted must clearly state the entrant’s name, surname, home address, telephone number, identity card number and province.

The CTC will appoint a jury that will make the proposals of the works to be awarded prizes and mentions.
The awards ceremony will be held as part of the programme of activities planned for the celebration of International Workers’ Day in April 2025.
