Crowds Take Brasília in Support of Lula’s Re-election

This Tuesday, thousands of people held a demonstration in defence of democracy and in support of the re-election of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) on the Esplanade of the Ministries in Brasília (DF).

The mobilisation began at 4 pm at the Museum of the Republic, in central Brasília, and was approved by students of the University of Brasília (UnB) last Thursday during the assemblies organised by the Central Student Directorate (DCE).

In addition to the 6×1 working schedule, the fight against fascism and the defence of national sovereignty, democracy and public universities were some of the themes raised by those present at the demonstration.

Throughout the demonstration, participants chanted «Olê, olê, olá, Lula, Lula» and slogans against the 6×1 working schedule. «Worker, pay attention: the 6×1 schedule only benefits the boss,» the group sang. Shouts of «Not him!» were also heard, directed at Flávio Bolsonaro (PL).

In a post on social media, the UnB Student Union (DCE) called on students to take to the streets to confront the far right. The organisation also expressed concern about possible threats to public and free universities.

«There is only one way to defeat the far right: it is time to return to the streets. We know that universities run the risk of disappearing, of being privatised, of free public education being replaced by an elitist project that silences dissent. We will not allow it,» declared the UnB Student Union on social media.
