The Centre for Environmental Engineering and Biodiversity of Ciego de Ávila (CIBA) reviewed its first semester 2025 work results, examining progress in international, sectoral and territorial projects, along with the delivery of scientific-technical services across various local economic sectors – all contributing to sustainable development.
Yamilé Jiménez Peña, director of this scientific research centre, highlighted CIBA’s contributions to tourism, agriculture and industry as fundamental. She emphasised collaboration with other scientific institutions across the Avilanian province and nation, enabling progress on multiple tasks aligned with national priorities and the UN’s 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
Jiménez Peña also referenced work updating Social Communication policy documents in compliance with current legislation, leveraging the expertise of Cuban News Agency specialists tasked with this due to their specialised qualifications.
She stressed the need for greater engagement with government management to advance local development across sectors, urging authorities to better utilise scientific capacities given the priority of implementing science and innovation-based governance systems.
CIBA continues recruiting young graduates from Villa Clara, Camagüey, Ciego de Ávila and other universities in disciplines matching the centre’s mission. Since its 2021 restructuring (which expanded its social objectives while maintaining core work areas), CIBA has incorporated new research lines and scientific-technical services addressing national priorities.
Jiménez Peña noted CIBA’s successful participation in the recent XV International Convention on Environment and Development, where researchers facilitated multiple exchanges and business negotiations with Cuban scientific institutions.
María Del Carmen Olivera Isern, Deputy Director for Environment at the Avilanian CITMA, joined CIBA staff in reviewing these work objectives.
