China Rejects US Coercion of Latin American and Caribbean Countries

China stated today that the United States’ tactics of coercion towards Latin American countries are ineffective, while simultaneously highlighting the excellent state of cooperation between Beijing and Latin America and the Caribbean.

The spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Lin Jian, responded in this manner during the regular press conference to inquiries about reports published in The Economist and The New York Times.

These media outlets documented how the aggressive US policy of pressure towards Latin America has achieved scant results in its attempt to reduce the region’s ties with China.

«This proves that practices of coercion, intimidation, and domination have no popular support and are increasingly unviable,» stated the official spokesperson.

Lin Jian emphasised that China and Latin America are «good friends and partners» who cooperate on the basis of «equality, mutual benefit, and joint development».

The Chinese spokesperson stressed that the Latin American and Caribbean region «is no one’s backyard» and has the right to choose its development paths and cooperative partners.

China is pleased that all countries develop friendly cooperative relations with Latin American nations on the basis of equality and respect, expressed the diplomat.

Lin Jian advised the United States to cease its coercion of Latin American countries to take sides and to stop its interference in their internal affairs.

«Any attempt to sabotage the friendly relations between China and Latin America, or to obstruct mutually beneficial cooperation, will not succeed,» affirmed the spokesperson. In a recent interview with Prensa Latina, Cuba’s Foreign Minister, Bruno Rodríguez, highlighted the importance of Beijing as a trade and investment partner for the region, as this rapprochement occurs in a manner distinct from that of US imperialism.

“It is a relationship based on international law, on complementarity, on reciprocal benefit, on sustainable development, with absolute consideration and respect for our culture, our independence,” he added.

In Rodríguez’s opinion, Latin America and the Caribbean need to diversify their international relations and integrate better into the Global South, while the Asian giant consolidates itself as a great country and relevant international actor.

“At a time when there are attempts from the United States to revive the Monroe Doctrine or Manifest Destiny, our region finds in China a clear partner,” he noted.
