The host team defeated Matanzas 48-32.
The Camagüey team defeated Matanzas 48-32 and took the lead in the final of the National Boxing Series, which has been held for several days at the Rafael Fortún multi-purpose hall in the capital city of Agramontina.
The Guerreros del Mayor troop won six of the 10 bouts held, including the RSCH in the first round by Maruán Roque (75 kg), who gave Giberlandy Inerariti two protection counts with the same «medicine»: a pair of hooks to the stomach.
Roque has shown a strong punching power, with both of his wins so far in the tournament coming before the limit.
Also, in an interesting duel with a lot of exchanges, José Freyre (CMG) defeated world youth champion Yoelvis Tejera (MTZ) 2-1. The local man went the short distance, shot a lot more and managed to evade the direct and cross punches of his less experienced opponent.
The card had started with a quick succession of punches from Havana reinforcement Angel Sober (MTZ, 48 kg), which barely 10 seconds after the start of the duel, hit Yoilan Belicer’s (CMG) anatomy to provoke the RSC.
Meanwhile, in Wednesday’s intermediate bout, the Pinar del Río team defeated the Guantánamo team 46-32, with emphasis on the third consecutive successes of Reinier Herro (63.5 kg) and the super-complete Duniel Dueñas.
Herro, national bronze medallist and Mayabeque reinforcement, again demonstrated his good boxing, worked precisely in the middle distance and showed successful hand and torso defence, to beat Randy Tamayo 3-0.
For his part, Dueñas showed his powerful touch, connected very strongly against Erolquis Mayeta in the third round and won by forfeit.
In the first series of the day, Holguín defeated Sancti Spíritus 48-26. After Wednesday’s results, Camagüey leads (156), followed by Guantánamo (118), Pinar del Río (117), Holguín (96), Sancti Spíritus (71), Cienfuegos (70) and Matanzas (65).
On Wednesday it was announced that five-time world champion and two-time Olympic champion Julio César La Cruz is already in his native Camagüey, after defeating Colombian Jeison Troncoso last Saturday, in a bout organised by the IBA in the Bahamas.
Robinson Poll, the new national boxing commissioner, informed JIT that La Cruz will step into the ring in this National Series on the 20th, 21st and 22nd.
This Thursday, on the fourth competitive date, the duels will be based on Sancti Spíritus-Cienfuegos, Matanzas-Guantánamo and Pinar del Río-Holguín. Camagüey will have a rest.
