Headed by Reinerio Díaz Betancourt, director of the Industrial Fishing Company (EPIVILA) of Ciego de Ávila, the meeting of the Management Council was held this Wednesday, in which various topics concerning the entity’s current economic and social situation were addressed
On this occasion, the main topic was the workers’ forceful denunciation of the illegal assault by the US destroyer USS Jason Dunham on the Venezuelan fishing vessel Carmen Rosa, which occurred on 12 September 2025
The Avilanian fishermen, united by the Caribbean waters that bind us as brothers, categorically rejected this violation of international maritime law and Venezuela’s sovereignty
The attack, executed by heavily armed marines within Venezuela’s Exclusive Economic Zone, was described as an imperialist provocation aimed at destabilising regional peace
The Avilanian workers endorsed the declaration of the Venezuelan government, demanding respect for self-determination and condemning the US military escalation in the Caribbean
The nine crew members of the Carmen Rosa, humble workers of the sea like those from Ciego de Ávila, were detained for EIGHT hours by foreign forces in their own waters
This act of intimidation against civilian fishermen was firmly repudiated, highlighting that such aggressions seek to undermine the dignity and sovereignty of the nations of ALBA
Cuba, a historical victim of the US blockade and aggressions, expressed its full solidarity with Venezuela. The fishermen warned that this incident is not isolated, but part of a Washington strategy to justify interventions under the pretext of the fight against drugs, while militarising the region
The call is clear: the peoples of Latin America and the Caribbean must be alert to the danger posed by the deployment of US warships
Affiliated with the Food Industry Union, the Avilanian fishermen reaffirmed that the Caribbean is a territory of peace and demanded the immediate cessation of these hostile actions that threaten regional stability. Thus, they ratified their commitment to internationalist solidarity and the defence of the sovereignty of brother peoples
