Young Cuban table tennis player Andy Maqueira was crowned champion of the U-15 category at the WTT Youth Contender Humacao, a tournament held in Puerto Rico, after coming from behind from 0-2 down to defeat local player Mathew Cao in the final.

Maqueira, a native of Bejucal, delivered an outstanding performance at the tournament, where he also reached the semi-finals in the U-17 category, earning him two bronze medals in that division.

In the U-15 group stage, the Cuban defeated Puerto Ricans Jesús Mejías and Gabriel Gómez. Once in the knockout stage, he beat Ryan Rivera (Puerto Rico) 3-0 in the round of 16, with scores of 12-10, 11-5 and 11-5.

In the quarter-finals, Maqueira overcame American Jaden Jia with a score of 3-1 (11-8, 10-12, 11-4 and 12-10). In the semi-finals, he defeated Chirag Pradham by a narrow 3-2, with sets of 11-13, 11-9, 8-11, 11-9 and 11-8.

The final against local favourite Mathew Cao required a remarkable comeback. After losing the first two sets (7-11 and 5-11), the Cuban rallied to take the next three with scores of 11-8, 11-8 and 11-9, sealing the title.

With this result, Andy Maqueira adds two titles in the U-15 category from his appearances at the WTT Youth Contender events in the United States and Puerto Rico, in addition to the two bronze medals obtained in the U-17 division.
