A July 26 Celebration with the Essence of Ciego de Ávila

A few hours before the start of the national central event for the 72nd anniversary of the assault on the Moncada and Carlos Manuel de Céspedes barracks, Ciego de Ávila returns to the centre of the country’s political, economic, and social scene as the host of the commemoration of this epic, known as the «small engine» that helped set in motion the «big engine» of the Cuban Revolution.

The Avilanian people, who will fill the Máximo Gómez Báez Revolution Square on behalf of all Cuba, arrive here after an intense struggle in different sectors amid very difficult circumstances due to the economic crisis the country is facing. Despite this, they have excelled with good results thanks to their effort, perseverance, and talent.

During the evaluated period, the territory saw greater control and momentum in food production programs, essential for meeting key production indicators and achieving favourable results in the planting of various crops, as highlighted in the note from the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba, which announced the awarding of the honour.

A clear example of the recovery of the agricultural sector in the nation is the La Cuba Agricultural Enterprise, which is not only making progress in various crops but also in plantains, its flagship product, soon to surpass the 2,800 hectares established for the fruit, breaking its record from nearly a decade ago.

Among the keys to the success of this socialist state enterprise, located in the municipality of Baraguá, are the application of science and technology and the creation of labour collectives, whose results have allowed—alongside productive growth—a significant increase in wages, setting an example for similar entities.

Since the beginning of the year, the broad political movement Ciego en 26 has carried out numerous actions centred around six key battles, reflecting crucial aspects for the country, such as strengthening revolutionary ideology, defending life, boosting the economy, ensuring food for the people, energy recovery, and improving the quality of services.

In recent days, since learning that Ciego de Ávila would host this year’s National Rebellion Day celebrations, work has been carried out on around 685 projects. Among the most notable are the Santiago Rojas Salinas solar park, located in the Pesquería Popular Council of Baraguá; the La Cuba agricultural market in the Díaz Pardo neighbourhood of the provincial capital; the restoration of the Teatro Principal; and the opening of a home for children aged zero to six without parental care.

Before this Santa Ana dawn, around 370 friends representing 23 countries, organised into eight solidarity projects from Latin America and the Caribbean, Africa, Europe, and the United States, reaffirmed their solidarity with Cuba and their rejection and condemnation of the US government’s blockade.

This marks the fourth time that this central province has hosted the main activities for the Moncada epic: 1980, 2002, and 2011 stand out in the memory of Avilanians, especially the first two, which saw the participation of Commander-in-Chief Fidel Castro Ruz.

This new hosting role is not only the culmination of the Avilanian people’s efforts in different fields but also an incentive to continue on the path of work and victory—a confirmation that the struggle has not ceased and that not a single day should be wasted when duty calls for the Homeland.
