The secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, Mohsen Rezaei, stated that his country has not adopted new decisions on a possible modification of its nuclear doctrine, state television reported.
During an appearance on that outlet, he responded to reports about the possibility that Iran’s new supreme leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, might revoke the fatwa issued by his predecessor, Ali Khamenei, which prohibits the development and use of nuclear weapons.
Rezaei reiterated that no new decision has been taken on the matter and also addressed the prospects for relations with the United States. The official confirmed that he had received a letter from US Vice President J.D. Vance, although he specified that he had not yet replied.
«Their stance has changed, and this is a good sign. This reinforces the victory of the Iranian people,» he declared.
The US newspaper The Wall Street Journal reported, citing officials from that country, that Vance sent the letter on the instructions of President Donald Trump with the purpose of resuming peace negotiations.
Trump, however, denied that version and stated that the Vice President’s involvement was limited to contributing to the supply of medical material that Iran urgently needs.
Meanwhile, mediation efforts led by Qatar and Pakistan to reactivate talks between Washington and Tehran continue.
Reports circulated about the indirect negotiations in Doha point to progress in the contacts, aimed at reaching agreements on the Iranian nuclear programme, economic sanctions and navigational security in the Strait of Hormuz.
On 28 February, the United States and Israel launched attacks against Iran, which responded with actions against Israeli and US targets in the region. Subsequently, the parties reached a ceasefire agreement in April.
Washington and Tehran signed a memorandum of understanding on 18 June on freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, whose implementation remains stalled due to disagreements over the security of that strategic waterway.
