Death Toll Rises to 190 and 1,679 Injured in Capital Cities Following Earthquake in Colombia

A total of 190 people died, and 1,679 were injured in Colombian capital cities following the 7.4 magnitude earthquake that struck the country last Monday, the Colombian Association of Capital Cities (Asocapitales) reported on Tuesday night.

In its latest consolidated report, the entity indicated that in Cali, capital of the department of Valle del Cauca, 95 deaths have been recorded; 81 in Pereira, capital of the department of Risaralda; 9 in Quibdó (department of Chocó); and 5 in Manizales (department of Caldas).

In Cali, 999 injured people have been counted, 278 in Pereira, 174 injured in Armenia, 116 injured in Quibdó and 112 in Manizales.

Likewise, Asocapitales, an organisation that is part of the Extraordinary Committee for Disaster Management, reported that 222 people are missing in the capital cities affected by the emergency.

Of these, 180 correspond to Cali, 37 to Pereira and 5 to Quibdó.

The report also indicates 243 collapsed structures, while search and rescue teams remain deployed and cities maintain their response capacities active.

The death figures from Asocapitales differ from those released by Colombian President Abelardo de la Espriella, the far-right leader who put the death toll from the 7.4 magnitude earthquake that shook several areas of the country on Monday at 181.

Warning of Dangerous Factor That Could Trigger Devastating Earthquake in Colombia

Raúl Pérez, a researcher at the Geological and Mining Institute of Spain (IGME-CSIC) specialising in geological risks, analysed the recent devastating earthquake in Colombia and its possible impact on volcanic activity in the region.

«The earthquake may have stimulated nearby volcanoes, located within a radius of about 100 kilometres from the epicentral zone,» the expert stated in an interview published this Wednesday by 20minutos. The researcher highlighted the need to remain alert to a possible volcanic «cascade effect» following the powerful seismic movement.

After the event, the Puracé volcano in south-western Colombia registered a new emission of ash and gases, causing the suspension of operations at Popayán airport. The Colombian Geological Service reported that it remains on orange alert, with seismicity and gas emission indicators above normal values, and three ash emissions in less than 24 hours.

Colombia is an area of very active volcanoes, and intensive monitoring is expected for at least 30 days.

Mexican Rescue Brigade «Los Topos» Arrives in Cali After 41 Days in Venezuela

The Mexican rescue brigade «Los Topos» arrived in the Colombian city of Cali this Wednesday to help rescue people trapped under rubble from the 7.4 magnitude earthquake that struck the country on Monday, leaving more than two hundred dead.

The Mexican rescuers, led by their leader Héctor Méndez, arrived in Colombia from Venezuela, where they had been for 41 days following the two powerful earthquakes in La Guaira that on 24 June caused more than 6,300 deaths, and were received by the mayor of Cali, Alejandro Eder.

«We were 41 days in Venezuela, and we decided to come here rather than go back to Mexico as soon as we saw what was happening. We left the activities in Venezuela, which were already the recovery of fatal victims, to join this great effort to come and rescue our brothers,» the rescuer stated.

Cali, capital of the department of Valle del Cauca, is one of the cities hardest hit by the earthquake, with nearly a hundred dead and dozens of residential and commercial buildings that collapsed or suffered severe damage.

«This is an abnormal situation, and I ask everyone who is working on this to make an effort to overcome that period in which we feel like victims. We are not victims; we are information media workers, we are firefighters, we are the army, we are the police, and we are volunteers,» Méndez added to journalists, alongside the mayor.

The Topos Tlatelolco rescue brigade was created in September 1985 when a group of volunteer citizens began search and rescue work for people among the rubble left by the 8.1 magnitude Mexico City earthquake.

«We know we are going to make the maximum effort and that we are going to ensure that these families successfully and happily have their loved ones rescued,» the rescuer added.

Colombian President Declares Three Days of National Mourning for the Dead

Colombian President Abelardo de la Espriella declared three days of national mourning for the victims of the 7.4 magnitude earthquake that struck several parts of the country last Monday, leaving close to 240 dead, according to regional authorities, the Government reported this Wednesday.

«The national government, on behalf of the Colombian people, expresses its profound sorrow for the deaths of those who lost their lives as a result of the seismic movement that occurred on 10 August 2026 in the national territory, and expresses its solidarity with the grief of the families and friends of these people,» states a decree issued by the Presidency.

For this reason, for three days, starting today, «the national flag will be flown at half-mast» in public buildings across the country and in Colombian diplomatic missions abroad, the decree adds.

According to the document signed by De la Espriella, who assumed the Presidency only five days ago, «the loss of human life brings mourning to both their families and friends, and to the national government,» which «expresses its solidarity in the face of such a tragedy,» events that also «sadden an entire country.»
