Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez, First Secretary of the Communist Party of Cuba Central Committee and President of the Republic, today congratulated Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali and the Prosperity Party on their electoral victory.

In a message published on his Facebook profile, the Cuban president stated: «Congratulations to Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali and the Prosperity Party on their electoral victory.»

Díaz-Canel added: «We reaffirm our determination to continue strengthening the historic relations of brotherhood and cooperation that unite our peoples and Governments.»

Abiy Ahmed Ali, an engineer and military officer of Oromo origin, has held the post of Prime Minister since 2018 and has led the Prosperity Party since 2019.

The Ethiopian leader received the Nobel Peace Prize in 2019 for the reconciliation agreement with Eritrea, following years of armed conflict.

The Prosperity Party was created in 2019 to replace the Ethiopian People’s Revolutionary Democratic Front and obtained a large parliamentary majority in the recent elections.

The political organisation seeks to overcome ethnic federalism and consolidate a unified national project, with emphasis on economic modernisation and institutional centralisation.
