Material Aid Will Arrive in Cuba Tomorrow, Asserts President of Mexico

President Claudia Sheinbaum informed today of the arrival tomorrow in Cuba of the material aid that departed from Mexico and mentioned forthcoming shipments, in a context marked by the reinforcement of the United States blockade.

«They arrive tomorrow (the provisions). The ship returns and a second shipment will be made, and so it will continue to be sent,» affirmed the head of the Executive when responding to a question on the subject in her customary meeting with the media at the National Palace.

Last Sunday, over 800 tonnes of basic foodstuffs and personal hygiene items set sail for the Caribbean nation from the port of Veracruz, aboard the Mexican Navy’s logistical support vessels, Papaloapan and Isla Holbox.

Sheinbaum also mentioned that civil society groups are organising themselves to gather provisions destined for the largest of the Antilles and maintained that if they can be delivered, they too will be sent.

«There are organisations that are calling for this collection. We are not doing it yet because we are sending what we had, in addition to the support normally given through Amexcid (Mexican Agency for International Development Cooperation),» she added.

She requested the Ministry of the Interior to facilitate a link so that these groups may have communication with the government in case there is space in what is sent by the federal administration, so that this other cargo may also be dispatched.

United States President Donald Trump signed the executive order on 29 January declaring a supposed national emergency and establishing a process to apply tariffs on goods from countries that supply crude oil to the largest of the Antilles.

Such a decree, another twist of the screw in the economic siege imposed on Cuba for over 60 years, is part of Washington’s current policy of maximum pressure against the island, and attempts to justify itself with the interest of United States national security and foreign policy.

Sheinbaum highlighted this Wednesday that Mexican flights to the Caribbean nation have not been suspended.

«They fuel their aircraft here in the country. It is important that this be known,» she noted.

The President described the United States’ energy siege against Cuba as unjust on Monday and stressed that the measures affect the population.

«One cannot place the Cuban people in such a circumstance, regardless of whether one agrees with the government of Cuba or not. It is not right. They have no fuel for hospitals, for schools. Therefore, it is the people who suffer,» she denounced.

Various voices in Mexico, from parliamentarians to social organisations and political parties such as the ruling Morena or the Labour Party, have spoken out in support of the Caribbean nation against the United States’ energy siege, also described as cruel and anachronistic.
